2019 – A preparation for 2020

2019 would see a quieter year for Matthew Jackson and all behind the scenes largely due to Matthew’s commitment to finishing his part time Masters degree in Automotive Systems Engineering with Loughborough University. The reduction in time competed was paid off with a Distinction level degree.

However, that aside, it certainly hasn’t been a year without rallying. When not researching and writing university reports, Matthew has been servicing on rallies, completing gravel crew duties in Ireland as well as being a member of the safety car team on both the Cambrian Rally and Wales Rally GB National - real honour. A huge amount of experience has been gained in 2019 of which the team aim to put into good use moving forwards.

From an academic point of view, the title of Matthew's Masters project was 'Electrification in Stage Rallying and the affect on Spectator Safety' - a very prominent topic in today's world. Matthew was fortunate to have the support of the eRally team allowing the use of the all electric Renault Zoe rally car and in fact, the project presented the opportunity to use the Zoe for the very first time on gravel. A number of sound measurements were made in comparison to an N/A petrol rally car to assess the noise emission between the 2 vehicles. With the sale of the trusty Nissan Micra which has served the team for the past 9 years, a replacement was sought in the way of the iconic rally car – the Subaru Impreza. The ex Prodrive example is the perfect step into four wheel drive rallying for Matthew as he makes the full time transition in 2020.

Work is underway in preparation for the 2020 season. Final plans and details are yet to be decided, however, the options are looking very promising from both a competitive and promotion point of view.
